When Being Misunderstood Feels Worse Than Being Disliked
I think being misunderstood hurts most when we care deeply about the person doing the misunderstanding.
We want them to know our intentions.
Our reasons.
The parts of the story they can't see.
Sometimes they will. Sometimes they won't.
And perhaps growing up emotionally isn't about learning how to explain ourselves perfectly.
Maybe it's also learning that we can survive being misunderstood.
We can know ourselves even when someone else doesn't.
And sometimes, that's enough.
You Don’t Always Have to Know What You’re Feeling
I've become increasingly comfortable with the idea that some feelings need time before they make sense.
Not everything has to be named immediately.
Not every emotion needs a reason before it can be acknowledged.
Sometimes we can simply say:
Something is going on with me. I don't quite know what it is yet, and I don't have to know today. I can just be.
Maybe that's what simply is part of self-awareness.
When You Don't Feel Like Yourself Around Certain People
I think we spend a lot of time asking whether the people in our lives are good for us.
Perhaps it's also worth occasionally asking a different question:
Who do I become when I'm with them?
Not because we should expect every relationship to bring out the exact same version of us, but because the relationships that matter most should leave some room for us to actually be there.
Not performing. Not managing. Not trying to get it right.
Just being ourselves.
