When You Find Yourself Replaying a Conversation Long After It’s Over
I wonder how many hours we spend revisiting conversations that the other person has long since forgotten.
How many times we rehearse explanations nobody has asked us for, correct responses we can no longer use, or worry about impressions we may never be able to confirm.
Perhaps the goal isn't to stop thinking about our conversations altogether.
It's to recognise when thinking about them is helping us understand something, and when we're simply trying to obtain a certainty that isn't available to us.
A conversation can be imperfect and still be meaningful.
We can wish we'd said something differently without needing to rewrite the entire experience.
And sometimes, we can let a conversation end where it ended.
Even if our minds are still looking for the perfect last word.
The Conversations We Keep Having in Our Heads
We’re all going to replay certain conversations, that’s an unfortunate part of being human.
But perhaps the goal isn’t to stop reflecting altogether; it’s to notice when we’re no longer reflecting, and have instead started rehearsing the same worry.
Sometimes the conversation we’re trying hardest to finish isn’t with someone else.
It’s with ourselves.
